East of State

Early in the 1920's Santa Barbara was a sleepy Pueblo that became a beacon to folks from around the world looking for the best place to live. The Johnstone family made that choice and asked renowned Architect Carleton Winslow to design a home for them in the same gracious style he had done for many of the rich and famous of the day. This gracious one-story home was granted a permit to build in 1925.

The Andalusian style home sits proudly set back from the street. Three large French doors in front of the house fill the home with southern exposure sunlight, softened by mature landscaping. Entering through the heavy planked front door, you are transformed to another time. An adjacent morning room is bathed in natural light and walls of glass bring the lush backyard seemingly indoors. Emphasis on comfortable lifestyle continues as you enter the library with its generous size and volume with French doors, again, opening to another private patio and the manicured yard and rose garden.

The bedroom wing has three glorious oversized rooms each with abundant storage and their own full baths. A sunny laundry room is adjacent to the bedroom. A two-car garage is at the end of a gated driveway with plenty of off street parking. Up a meandering path lined with stonewalls past a rose cutting garden is a fenced pool with solar heat and a charming guesthouse.
