The Gould Estate
Montecito, California
Seldom does a buyer find a significant piece of historic architecture still retaining substantial grounds that offer privacy, seclusion, and a home that offers expansive rooms and even that most rare and sought after feature - panoramic ocean and harbor views. The Gould estate of 1918 is that rare find and we are proud to offer it to its new trustee.
This impressive Early California Hacienda was created by the most respected Los Angeles architect of the time, Reginald Johnson, who contributed several of our area's most substantial estates and Montecito's most famous structure, the Biltmore Hotel. His work attracted much attention and he continued to receive Santa Barbara commissions although his fees were normally much higher than local architects. Johnson designed two very similar California Hacienda major estates in Montecito and for, what were then, two of the richest men in our country: This home for Edwin Gould in 1918 and Edgewood for Max C. Fleishmann in 1920.
A gated, circular motor court guarded by large pine and California live oaks leads your guests to a hand carved mission gate entry opening to an 83' x 70' walled interior courtyard. Heavy beams, wooden storm shutters with wrought iron hardware, a wide brick entry way, wrought iron light fixtures and a Spanish tile fountain alert the visitor that he is about to enter a special home. Generous public rooms with wonderful period details like cut stone fireplace mantels, highly detailed oak leaf wall sconces and all framing panoramic ocean and island views warms any intimate affair and also welcomes grand scale entertaining. Two parcels of 5 +/- acres.
