Summerland

The Big Yellow House and the history of Summerland are inseparable.  The development and life of the town has revolved around the Big Yellow House since it was built by Summerland’s founder Henry Lafayette Williams in the late 1800’s.  After Mr. Williams passed away, his widow Agnes and her new husband George Becker remodeled the property from the foundation up in 1910, sparing no expense.  To this day visitors of the property can enjoy the intricate painting and the fine hand-carved Australian Gum Wood finishing.  The property was then sold in 1971 and shortly thereafter painted yellow and renamed The Big Yellow House.  The Big Yellow House closed its doors in late 2005 and the property was sold again in 2006.  The owner attempted to reopen as The Yellow Rose of Summerland in September 2007, but the property was foreclosed on in October of 2009.
